Sanne Fleur, Page, Band Manager, Interogator

Sanne, when a student at Mammatus Study, worked as a page in service to Headmaster Fallon Gale. Her and the other pages took turns running errands for the headmaster day and night. She picked up lessons quickly, but didn’t like to practice; preferring to party whenever she could get away from the study. She developed a reputation as a woman that never said no to anything or anybody that looked like a good time.

Having abilities with the Gift strong enough to become a Defender, she was sent out on her practicum. Halfway through her assignment, she was to visit a secretive study within the Vorg Province, where she was to learn advanced mind-drifting, and interrogation techniques. Unbeknownst to her study masters, that secretive study was the home of a North Cenoka infiltrator. Sanne’s carefree attitude intrigued the spy enough for them to test her moral flexibility with some advanced techniques taught hedge witches. When Sanne learned that even she could say no to some things, by refusing to take a bite out of a human spirit she was released and instructed to continue her practicum. The experience unnerved her and left her disillusioned about becoming a Defender.

When she moved on to her next assignment, to learn from an Amp.* She fell in with the band called Dead Dragon and let her party-girl nature take away her worries and ended up becoming the band’s manager. Dead Dragonflourished under her guidance, she found them ever larger venues to play, and their audience grew accordingly. She was the happiest she had ever been until a mishap left her mentally incapacitated. This is when she was nicknamed Lump, she’d still be known by that name if not for the intervention of her classmates.

One of those classmates was Malo Feltmanson-Brusk, who had a huge crush on her. After getting her mind back in place, she revealed that she reciprocated his feelings. The experience and seeing how far her underclassman have surpassed her, forced some self-introspection and she decided to be better. While her and Malo have made commitments to one another, their paths take them in opposite directions.

Now Sanne splits her time between managing Dead Dragon and performing interrogations in an effort to root out the North Cenoka spy network that has grown in their midst.

* An Amp is someone with the Gift and the talent to amplify all the sounds made by the band, they also are relied upon to add effects like reverb and distortion. The really good Amps can also perform light shows, while amplifying the band.

Author’s note

Sanne and Lump began as separate characters. Sanne was imagined originally as a cute, older girl for Malo to notice as he hit puberty. I lazily kept adding to her importance by utilizing her instead of creating new characters. In hindsight that was a great idea as I’m sitting at 414 named characters in this series to date.

Lump was literally lifted from a song of the same name by the band “Presidents of the United States of America.” I was still writing Embers Burn, and other than Pilots; abilities like mind-drifting or swapping weren’t going to show up until Monsters Within, but I was already think of all the weird things that could happen.

The two were merged while I was writing the outline for Monsters Within. Hearing the song, I decided it would be fun to have Malo rescue a Dead Dragon groupie using a newly acquired ability learned on his practicum. Malo was going to drop in on the dragon anyways, using Sanne as the reason was better than him going as a social call. The premise is silly, but I need to write silly every so often to balance out the serious nature of the other story lines.

I don’t recall ever using the name Lump in any of the stories. If someone cares to look, feel free to correct me in the comments.
